Food for avoiding serious birth defects

Spina bifida and anencephaly are neural tube defects whcih can cause serious brain damage and paralysis in infants but are easily prevented. All it takes is 0.4 milligrams of folic acid (Vitamin B) a day. To avoid heartbreak, all women capable of getting pregnant should get at least 0.4 mg of folic acid daily as a precaution against neural tube defects.

Legumes (dried peas & beans)

Orange juice

Whole grain breads & cereals
