Food for gallstones

Gallstones are crystalline bodies formed in the gall bladder by accretion or concretion of normal or abnormal bile components. The gall bladder is a pear shaped pouch that squirt bile into the intestines to aid digestion. When the bile in the gall bladder become supersaturated with cholesterol, stones as small as grains of sand or as large as an inch in diameter, crystal out. Most of the time, the stones are harmless, but sometimes when the gall bladder contract to release bile, a stone shoots out and obstruct the opening leading to the duct, and agonising pain may result.

What can be done to prevent gallstones attack? A diet change may help. A Harvard study of 88,000 middle-aged women revealed that women who ate the most vegetable were less likely to have symtoms of gallstones. Drinking a little alcohol also helped. Alcohol increases the breakdown of cholesterol, making it less available for gallstone formation. Avoid a sugar-rich, fiber-poor diet, that is, eat lots of fiber-rich food. If you have gallstones, avoid coffee as coffee can stimulate gallbladder contraction, possibily bringing on a gallbladder attack. Take regular meals and avoid fasting. Do not be overweight, but at the same time avoid quick weight loss.
